Vietnam makes important proposals on Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

Vietnam has presented some proposals at the ongoing second session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2026 Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Geneva (VNA) – Vietnam has presented some proposals at the ongoing second session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2026 Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

The session, held in Geneva from July 22 to August 2, looks into the principles and methods for promoting the full enforcement as well as the universality of the NPT. Recommendations are also made for the NPT Review Conference, scheduled to take place in New York in 2026.

Attending the event, Deputy Permanent Representative of Vietnam in Geneva Cung Duc Han affirmed Vietnam’s consistent policy of supporting the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons towards general and complete disarmament. The country attaches importance to the NPT’s key role in efforts to eliminate and prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons, and ensure the right to peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

Presenting some proposals, Vietnam appealed to the member states to maintain efforts to promote the enforcement and universality of the NPT, the balanced and comprehensive implementation of all the three pillars of the treaty, and substantive progress in the pillar of disarmament.

The country underlined efforts to guarantee security for the countries not possessing nuclear weapons, including the establishment of nuclear-weapon-free zones. It called on the nuclear superpowers to join in the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ).

Aside from measures for boosting the efficient enforcement of the NPT, Vietnam also affirmed the importance of the international agreements related to the non-proliferation and disarmament of nuclear weapons, calling on countries to participate in and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and together promote the early entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.

Han also highlighted Vietnam’s active and responsible contributions to the non-proliferation and disarmament of nuclear weapons, along with the guaranteeing on nuclear security and safety over the recent past.
