Vietnam proposes promoting parliaments’ role in green growth

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam proposed carryingforward the role of parliaments in promoting the approach towards greendevelopment and growth to serve recovery post COVID-19, at national, regional andglobal levels, at the COP26 Parliamentary Meeting in Glasgow, the UK, onNovember 7.

Le Quang Huy, member of the National Assembly StandingCommittee and head of the NA’s Committee for Science-Technology andEnvironment, led a Vietnamese delegation to the event.

The meeting, co-organised by the Inter-ParliamentaryUnion (IPU) and the British Group of the IPU, brought together about 200parliamentarians from countries worldwide.

The Vietnamese delegation raised opinions at all threesessions of the meeting, covering the appeal to parliaments to take actions againstclimate change, finance for climate change response, and losses caused byclimate change.

The meeting aimed to promote cooperation andopen dialogue among international parliamentarians and inspire delegates tocall on national governments to set ambitious plans to meet all the obligationsof the Paris Agreement targets. Crucially, they include commitments to strengthening the response to thethreat of climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions to limit globaltemperature rise this century to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industriallevels, while pursuing concerted efforts to limit any temperature increase evenfurther to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

On the sidelines of the meeting, the Vietnamesedelegation had meetings with heads of the RoK and UK delegations, during whichthey affirmed that the Vietnamese legislature backsinitiatives of foreign parliaments to cope with climate change./.
