Vietnam recognises US’s more positive assessment of anti-human trafficking efforts

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam recognisesthe more positive assessment made in the 2023 Trafficking in Persons Report by the US Department of State, Spokeswoman of the VietnameseMinistry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang told a regular press briefing on June22.
Replying to a reporter’s question aboutthe US Department of State’s release of the report, Hang highlighted theVietnamese Government’s policy of promoting legal, safe, and orderly migrationand also resolutely preventing and fighting illegal migration, arrangement ofillegal migration, and human trafficking.
She said that in the recent past,Vietnam has continued to strongly implement the human trafficking preventionand control programme for 2021 - 2025, with orientation towards 2030, and obtainedmany important results such as boosting the effectiveness of inter-sectoralcoordination, improving the statistical work, intensifying the investigation andsettlement of the human trafficking crime, and increasing communications toraise public awareness.
Vietnam has been exerting efforts toreach the targets of the Global Compact for Migration under the plan issued bythe Prime Minister on March 20, 2020 so as to consolidate a transparentmigration environment, protect the rights and legitimate interests of migrants,and prevent risks of human trafficking in international migration activities.
“Vietnam recognises the US side’smore positive assessment made in the 2023 Trafficking in Persons Report by the US Department of State”, the spokeswoman went on.
“In that spirit, we hope the twosides will continue cooperating closely in the time ahead so that the US side hasmore objective, precise, comprehensive assessment of the situation andsubstantive efforts of Vietnam. We are also ready to discuss concrete cooperationissues with the US side and relevant parties to together effectively carry outhuman trafficking prevention and control,” she added./.
Consistent with the viewpoint on facilitating safe, orderly and regular migration, and resolutely combating illegal migration, the Vietnamese government has regarded the fight against illegal migration and human trafficking as a regular and long-term political task, which should be performed proactively with the close coordination of the international community.
Deputy spokeswoman of the Foreign Ministry Pham Thu Hang has affirmed Vietnam’s determination to fight illegal migration while responding to the report that seven of the 20 bodies found on the coast of Taiwan (China) carried Vietnamese personal papers and were victims of human trafficking.
After over 10 years of implementation, the Law on Human Trafficking Prevention and Control revealed a number of shortcomings, Chairwoman of the National Assembly's Committee for Judicial Affairs Le Thi Nga told the NA on May 8 during an explanatory session on the law's observance.
Another 80 Vietnamese citizens recently rescued from a casino in Pampanga province, near Manila capital of the Philippines, have been safely repatriated, raising the number of those returning home so far to 140, said Deputy Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) Nguyen Duc Thang.
The UN has identified human trafficking as one of the four most dangerous crimes included in the Global Crime Prevention Programme. Member States also adopted resolution A/RES/68/192 and designated July 30 as the World Day against Trafficking in Persons.
