Vietnam, Switzerland discuss cooperation in research, innovation

Geneva (VNA) – Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Science and TechnologyBui The Huy had a working session with Swiss State Secretary for Education,Research and Innovation Martina Hirayama in Bern on October 23 to discuss bilateralcooperation in research and innovation.

At the event, the two sides informed each other of developments in science in their respective country as well as its prioritiesin sponsoring research and innovation activities.

Bilateral cooperation in science and technology has been implementedeffectively. In October 2019, the Swiss State Secretariat for Education,Research and Innovation (SERI) and the Vietnamese Ministry of Science andTechnology signed a memorandum of understanding on bilateral collaboration inthis field.

SERI has also appointed ETH Zurich University as a unitleading in scientific cooperation with Southeast Asia for the 2021-2024 fundingperiod. As a result, the university is rolling out collaboration tools for startupfunding and innovation pilot projects.

In addition, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)and the Vietnam National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (NAFOSTED)have been cooperating since 2020. Switzerland's support also includes the granting ofscholarships, enabling 120 Vietnamese researchers to spend time working at aSwiss university since 1961./.
