Vietnam, Thailand step up political, security cooperation

Hanoi (VNA) – Minister of Public Security Sen. Lieut. Gen. To Lam onAugust 6 hosted a reception for Secretary-General of the National SecurityCouncil (NSC) of Thailand Gen. Wanlop Rugsanaoh, who came to Vietnam to co-chairthe 10th meeting of the Vietnam-Thailand Joint Working Group (JWG)on politics and security.
Wanlop Rugsanaoh, head of the Thai JWG, andrepresentatives from Thailand’s relevant ministries and sectors, visitedVietnam from August 5-8 to attend the 10th meeting of the JWG at theinvitation of Deputy Minister of Public Security Sen. Lieut. Gen. Bui Van Nam, head of the Vietnamese JWG.
At the meeting, both sides spoke highly of the significance of the JWG, sayingthat political and security cooperation has played an important role inmaintaining and developing the traditional friendship as well as promoting the Vietnam-Thailandstrategic partnership in a more practical and extensive manner across various sectors.
They emphasized the importance of cooperation in responding to non-traditionalsecurity challenges such as climate change, energy security, food security,water security, natural disasters, and epidemics.
Also, they discussed specific measures to improve the efficiency of the JWG onpolitics and security.
Both sides hailed the JWG mechanism as animportant foundation for a united, peaceful and prosperous ASEAN Community asit is the third year to build the ASEAN Community and actively deploy a ComprehensivePlan to realise the ASEAN Community Vision 2025.
Armed, racial and religious conflicts,terrorism activities, territorial and natural resource disputes are changingfate of many countries, impacting the world’s political situation, seriouslythreatening global security and peace, as well as Vietnam and Thailand.
Therefore, the JWG mechanism has contributedto maintaining peace, security and stability of the two countries, ASEAN andinternational community, they said.
Gen. Vanlop Rugsanaoh thanked the Vietnameseside for warm hospitality and thorough preparations for the meeting.-VNA
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and a high-ranking delegation of Vietnam paid an official visit to Thailand from August 17-19 at the invitation of Prime Minister of Thailand Prayut Chan-ocha.
Vietnam and Thailand agreed on some measures to remove difficulties for businesses in carrying out trade activities at the third meeting of their joint trade committee in Hanoi on August 3.

In particular, in April 2023, the two sides successfully carried out a joint operation that dismantled a major organised, transnational drug trafficking ring involving both Vietnamese and Cambodian suspects.
