Vietnam, US intensify exchange of experience in peacekeeping activities

Hanoi (VNA) –Following the phone talks with partners to continue implementing activities forthe ASEAN Chairmanship Year 2020 and the non-permanent membership of the UnitedNations Security Council in the 2020-2021 term hosted by the Defence Ministry,Sen. Lt. Gen. Nguyen Chi Vinh, Deputy Minister of Defence, on July 1 held phonetalks with David F. Helvey, Acting Assistant Secretaryof Defense of the US.
Priorto the talks, Vinh hosted a reception for Daniel J. Kritenbrink, US Ambassadorto Vietnam, who also joined the event.
Duringthe talks, the two sides informed each other of the COVID-19 fight as well asthe difficulties confronting them, thanked each other for their mutualassistance in the fight, and agreed to continue intensifying their cooperationin this field.
Vinh informed the US side of the activities in the channel ofmilitary – defence cooperation between the ASEAN countries and the partner countrieswhich the US is one of the members, as well as on the ministerial-levelmeetings and other meetings organised by Vietnam.
The US side spoke highly of the adjustment of the agenda byVietnam for the ASEAN Chairmanship year and said it always supports theactivities of the ASEAN in general and Vietnam’s initiatives in particular.
On the bilateral ties, the two sides reviewed the results oftheir cooperation over the recent past, especially in the field of solving thewar consequences. They agreed to, in the time to come, push the cooperationfields suitable to the common relationship, with priority given to the solutionof the war consequences and the United Nations peacekeeping missions.
They also exchanged ideas on the regional and global situationof mutual concern and reached consensus that abiding by international law insettling disputes is an important measure that contributes to the trustbuilding, peace, stability and common development of the region and the worldas a whole./.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo affirmed on June 28 that the US welcomes the vision statement of ASEAN leaders, which was adopted at the recent 36th ASEAN Summit.

The show, together with a grand parade to be held silmutaneously at Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi, will celebrate the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution, the National Day, and the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA).
In particular, in April 2023, the two sides successfully carried out a joint operation that dismantled a major organised, transnational drug trafficking ring involving both Vietnamese and Cambodian suspects.
