Vietnam values WIPO assistance in promoting intellectual property

The growing technical cooperation between Vietnam and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) has helped the country establish regulations and technical facilities for the intellectual property system.

WIPO also helped train Vietnamese officialsrelated to intellectual asset management and build development centres,Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Tran Van Tung, who attendedthe 54th series of meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States ofthe WIPO from September 22-30, told Vietnam News Agency correspondentsin Geneva.

At the sessions, Ambassador NguyenTrung Thanh, Vietnam’s permanent representative to the United Nations,the World Trade Organisation (WTO), and other internationalorganisations, was elected as the new Chair of the WIPO CoordinationCommittee.

Thanh chaired the committee’s 70thmeeting on September 26, during which he appointed Deputy DirectorsGeneral and Assistant Directors General of the committee and consideredthe US’s proposal for a Supplementary Agenda Item entitled “the WIPOCoordination Committee to Provide Advice to the Lisbon Union Assemblyregarding the Convening of a Diplomatic Conference for the Adoption of aRevised Lisbon Agreement on Appellations of Origin and GeographicalIndications in 2015”.

WIPO is the global forumfor the promotion of intellectual property (IP) policy, services,information and cooperation. As a specialised agency of the UnitedNations, WIPO assists its 187 member states in developing a balancedinternational IP legal framework that meets society’s evolving needs.

It provides assistance in obtaining IPrights in multiple countries, resolves disputes, deliverscapacity-building programmes to help developing countries benefit fromIP, and provides free access to unique knowledge banks on IPinformation.-VNA

The PM revealed Vietnam’s plan to develop nuclear power in the near future, and called on the Swedish side to assist Vietnam in developing and refining legal and policy frameworks for the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes; training and developing human resources; ensuring nuclear safety; and conducting training and drills to improve incident management capabilities.
