Vietnam wins eight medals at 2024 Asian Physics Olympiad

All eight students of the Vietnamese national team competing in the 2024 Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO) bagged medals, including one gold, one silver and six bronzes.

Hanoi (VNA) -𝓡 All eight students of the Vietnamese national team competing in the 2024 Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO) bagged medals, including one gold, one silver and six bronzes.

The gold medal went to Than The Cong from the Bac Giang High School for the Gifted in the northern province of Bac Giang, while the silver medal was awarded to Ha Duyen Phuc from the Lam Son High School for the Gifted in the central province of Thanh Hoa. The bronze medals were given to Nguyen Nhat Minh from the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi; Nguyen Thanh Duy from the Tran Phu High School for the Gifted in the northern port city of Hai Phong City; Truong Phi Hung from the Bac Giang High School for the Gifted; Nguyen The Quan from the Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted in the central province of Nghe An; and Hoang Tuan Kiet and Tran Vu Le Hoang, both from the Lam Son High School for the Gifted.

The 24th APhO, held from June 3-10 in Malaysia, drawing the participation of 208 contestants from 27 countries and territories. This was the first APhO ever organised in this country, with the largest ever number of participating teams. The competition was divided into two sections: a five-hour theoretical examination and a five-hour laboratory experiment, consisting of either one or two experiments, according to the APhO 2024’s website.
This year's theoretical test was based on modern and practical applications of physics, such as fountains, fibre optics, and research results published in the renowned journal Nature on astrophysics.

The experimental part involved experiments with gyroscopes, a device used to maintain orientation and direction, often used in navigation systems. The part highlighted students’ practical applications in precise positioning for maritime aviation and self-balancing devices. The Ministry of Education and Training praised the team’s performance, highlighting Vietnam’s continued success at the APhO. Vietnam first participated in 2000, with its best result in 2018, winning four gold medals.
At the 2023 edition, all of the eight participating Vietnamese students also brought home honour, with four bronze medals and four certificates of merit. Meanwhile, the team won two bronzes and five certificates of merit in 2022. Last month, all seven members of the Vietnamese team to the 18th Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad (APIO) held in China from May 18 to 19 won medals. Pham Cong Minh, a 12th grader from the High School for Gifted Students under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi’s University of Sciences won a gold medal, while six remaining members earned silver. Based on the APIO results, four most excellent students will be selected to join the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) in Egypt from September 1 to 8. With the results, Vietnam ranked sixth among the 35 participating countries and territories, following China, Russia, Japan, the Republic of Korea and Hong Kong (China). Earlier this year, seventy-two Vietnamese students won medals at the International Talent Mathematics Contest 2024 (ITMC 2024) organised in Thailand on February 24-27. The students brought home 34 gold and 25 silver medals and one merit prize, marking the best achievement that Vietnamese students have earned at this contest so far.
The ITMC 2024 drew nearly 2,000 students from 10 countries and territories across the globe. It is a playground for excellent students to unleash their mathematics potential, and exchange experience and knowledge with each other. An awarding ceremony was held in Thailand on February 27./.
