Vietnamese leaders send greetings to Sri Lanka on 50 years of diplomatic ties

Hanoi (VNA) -
Party General Secretary andState President Nguyen Phu Trong sent greetings on July 21 to Sri LankanPresident Gotabaya Rajapaksa on the occasion of the 50th anniversary ofdiplomatic ties between Vietnam and Sri Lanka (July 21, 1970-2020).

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc also extended his congratulationsto his Sri Lankan counterpart Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham BinhMinh, meanwhile, cabled a congratulatory letter to Sri Lankan Foreign MinisterDinesh Gunawardena.

Together, Sri Lanka and Vietnam enjoy amicable ties inbilateral, regional, and multilateral diplomacy, Ambassador Walpita GamageSampath Prasanna said in a recent message to the English-language newspaper VietNam News of State-run Vietnam News Agency.

Cooperation between the two countries extends to the widerareas of politics, trade, investment and economics, defence, culture, education,tourism, and agriculture, among a host of others. The Sri Lanka - VietnamParliamentary Friendship Group also maintains cordial yet tight-knit relationsbetween the Parliament of Sri Lanka and the National Assembly of Vietnam. Therobust relationship is also marked by high-level visits undertaken by leaders fromboth countries.

Furthermore, Sri Lanka and Vietnam share close traderelations, with the trade balance over the years being in favour of Vietnam.

Two-way trade in 2019 stood at 381 million USD, withSri Lanka importing goods and services worth 302 million USD from Vietnam andexporting those worth 79 million USD to the country, according to theambassador./.
