Vietnamese officer to work at UN peace operations department

The Defence Ministry held a ceremony on March 12 to present the President’s decision to send Lieut. Col Tran Duc Huong from the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, to take up a position at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Hanoi (VNA) – TheDefence Ministry held a ceremony on March 12 to present the President’s decisionto send Lieut. Col Tran Duc Huong from the Vietnam Department of PeacekeepingOperations, to take up a position at the United Nations headquarters in NewYork.

Accordingly, Huong will serveas Planning Officer in the Office of MilitaryAffairs under the Department of Peace Operations at the UN headquarters in NewYork.

As thesecond Vietnamese military officer to qualify for working at the UNheadquarters, Huong passed four qualification rounds with flying colors.

He used towork as a Training Planning Officer at the UN Multidimensional IntegratedStabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) from 2016-2017and a Military Observer at the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) from2018-2019.

At theevent, Deputy Defence Minister Sen. Lieut. Gen Nguyen Chi Vinh asked Huong tomake the best use of his new position to offer effective consultations toVietnam during the country’s participation in the UN peacekeeping activities.

On theoccasion, Vinh also lauded nine Vietnamese officers for accomplishing tasks atthe MINUSCA and UNMISS. He wished that they would continue making activecontributions to the Vietnam Departmentof Peacekeeping Operations, as well as sharing experience with Vietnameseofficers who are assigned to join peacekeeping missions of the UN in the timeahead.

Since June 2014, Vietnam hassent 180 officials and officers from the Defence Ministry to the MINUSCA,UNMISS and the Department of Peace Operations atthe UN headquarters. Their contributions have been welcomed by the UN as wellas the public at home and abroad./.
