Hanoi (VNA) – Scientists of the Space Technology Institute under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and other Vietnamese experts have successfully restored the system control servers and enabledVNREDSat-1, Vietnam’s first remote sensing satellite, to take pictures againfrom April 4, according to the academy.
VNREDSat-1 is a proactive monitoring tool serving themanagement of natural resources and the environment, scientific research, and trainingas well as supporting the implementation of socio-economic sustainable developmentand national sovereignty safeguarding tasks.
Satellites of the same type have an average lifespan offive years, but VNREDSat-1 were used for nearly 9 years (from May 7, 2013 toNovember 9, 2021). During that time, it fulfilled its role as the first earthobservation satellite system of Vietnam by successfully providing a valuablesource of satellite images for the country.
On November 9, 2021, the VNREDSat-1 system encountered aserious technical error related to the hardware that stores operational and controldata.
The successful restoration of the system has marked a development step, bringing valuable experience to the engineers operating it and helping save a large amount of money and significantly shorten the time thesatellite is not in orbit.
Since its re-operation on April 4, the satellite has taken280 photos, with over 80 high-quality ones.
Experts and customers all assess that the photos taken by VNREDSat-1still ensure quality and efficiency to serve applications on socio-economicdevelopment and ensuring defence security./.
Vietnam has so far owned six satellites in the orbit as a result of implementing the Government’s Space Technology Research and Development Strategy towards 2020.
A workshop on the application of satellite data in monitoring pollution and research was held in Hanoi on December 1 as part of the projects "Join hands for clean air” and “Improving air pollution monitoring and management of Vietnam with satellite PM2.5 observation”.
