Vietnam’s determination to develop nuclear power praised

During a January 10 working session with keyleaders of the southern central province of Ninh Thuan where thefirst nuclear power plant of Vietnam is located, the IAEA leaderlauded Vietnam’s clear policies in building legal documents in thefield as well as the construction of an infrastructure system for theNinh Thuan nuclear power plant project.

He expressedhis pleasure at the remarkable progress of Vietnam during theimplementation of the country’s nuclear power development programme, aswell as Vietnam’s participation in major global discussions in thefield, including the International Convention on Nuclear Safety.

The 2011 Fukushima nuclear incident in Japan left many lessonsin nuclear safety, he said, adding that the Ninh Thuan plant has beenadjusted to ensure its safety.

According to ViceChairman of the Ninh Thuan provincial People’s Committee Do Huu Nghi,the locality hopes for more support from the IAEA during projectsupervision and management, thus ensuring the safety, quality andefficiency of the plant.

Earlier, Amano and aworking team from the IAEA visited the construction site of the NinhThuan power plant in Phuoc Dinh commune, Thuan Nam district. Theyinspected nuclear development models and updated the progress of theproject.-VNA

The PM revealed Vietnam’s plan to develop nuclear power in the near future, and called on the Swedish side to assist Vietnam in developing and refining legal and policy frameworks for the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes; training and developing human resources; ensuring nuclear safety; and conducting training and drills to improve incident management capabilities.
