Australia’s Fred Hollows Foundation (FHF) will provide 7.6 billion VND(360,000 USD) for a comprehensive eye-care project in southern VinhLong province for the 2013–16 period.
A memorandumof understanding to this effect was signed by Director of the provincialDepartment of Public Health, Tran Van Ut, and Director of the FHFVietnam Office, Huynh Tan Phuc, in the locality on November 22.
The project will help improve infrastructure and provide eye-careservices at affordable prices. It will also extend the comprehensiveeye-care models to all 8 towns and districts in the province,contributing to reducing the number of cases of blindness and sightimpairments from avoidable causes.
From 2009 to2012, FHF also funded a similar project, offering training in cataractsurgery and eye-care to over 900 doctors, nurses, medical techniciansand teachers.
The project helped upgrade localhospitals to common eye diseases, provided ophthalmological equipment to5 districts and offered cataract surgeries to 6,200 patients and eyetests to over 38,000 students.-VNA
