VN vows to contribute to TPP negotiation

Vietnam will continue making active contributions to the negotiation process of a Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement.
State President Truong Tan Sang has said Vietnam, with itsdetermination to boost renewal and international integration, willcontinue making active contributions to the negotiation process of aTrans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement, helping strengthencooperation and diversity of the TPP linkage.

Sang made the affirmation at a summit of TPP members, includingAustralia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore,Vietnam and the US, in Honolulu, Hawaii, the US on November 12 (localtime).

The Vietnamese leader suggested TPP membersjoin efforts to ensure negotiations look towards a balanced agreementthat really meets sustainable development goals of all members, pays dueattention to the “for the development” principle and take into accountthe development gap and diversity of the members.

Onthe same day, on the sidelines of the APEC Leaders’ Week, PresidentSang had separate meeting with Chinese Party General Secretary and StatePresident Hu Jintao, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and AustralianPrime Minister Julia Gillard.

While meeting withChinese Party General Secretary and State President Hu Jintao, PresidentSang emphasised Vietnam ’s strategic and long-term consistent policyof continuously consolidating and strengthening the friendship withChina .

The Chinese leader affirmed that theChinese Party, State and Government attach special importance torelations with Vietnam and are ready together with the VietnameseParty, State and Government to lift the comprehensive strategiccooperation partnership between the two countries to a new height.

Applauding Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s recent visit toChina , the two sides agreed to strengthen the exchange of visits byhigh-ranking leaders as well as boost economic-trade cooperationeffectively and practically.

The two sides will alsostrengthen people-to-people exchanges at both central and local levels,especially between socio-political organisations and young generations.

Regarding the East Sea issue, the two leadersagreed to seek a satisfactory solution for this issue through peacefulnegotiations.

President Sang stated that during theprocess of solving the East Sea issue, the two sides should observe thecommon perceptions of the two countries’ high-ranking leaders andseriously implement the agreement on basic principles guiding thesettlement of the sea-related issue on the basis of international laws,including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and theDeclaration on Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC).

The two leaders agreed to maintain close coordination and cooperationfor the success of this APEC Meeting and ensuring legitimate interestsof developing countries in the regionalisation and globalisation of theworld economy.

At the meeting with RussianPresident Dmitry Medvedev, the two sides expressed joys at the strongdevelopment of the Vietnam-Russia strategic partnership over the pasttime.

President Sang said that the two countriesstill see a great potential for cooperation so their ministries andbranches should effectively implement agreements reached by thehigh-ranking leaders and actively seek practical measures to boostbilateral ties.

He suggested the Russian side speedup the progress of its large-scale projects in Vietnam , especiallyin energy, military technique.

The two sides shouldwork together to make the Ninh Thuan 1 nuclear power plant a symbol ofthe new friendship and cooperation between the two countries, hestressed.

The two leaders agreed that the fineenergy cooperation between Vietnam and Russia has contributed tosocio-economic development in each country.

The twosides exchanged views on regional and international issues of commonconcern as well as highly valued the role of each country in regionalprogresses and cooperation mechanisms.

Talking withthe Australian Prime Minister, President Sang said he is pleased withthe development of bilateral ties over the past time, especially ininvestment, trade, education-training, defence-security, and tourism.

He suggested the two countries’ leaders maintainvisits and bilateral exchanges on the sidelines of internationalconferences. The two sides’ ministries and agencies should closelycoordinate in finding out practical measures to boost bilateral ties, headded.

PM Julia Gillard affirmed the AustralianGovernment’s support for Vietnam ’s effective renewal and reformefforts, saying that Australia is pleased to aid the country’sdevelopment projects.

The two sides agreed tocontinue close and effective coordination at regional and internationalforums, especially mechanisms centred by ASEAN, the East Asian Summit(EAS) and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).

Earlier on the day, President Sang attended the Vietnam-US BusinessForum and Dialogue, which was co-organised by the Vietnam Chamber ofCommerce and Industry (VCCI) and the University of Hawaii . Theforum drew the participation of representatives of nearly 200 US andVietnamese businesses.

On the occasion, thePresident witnessed the signing of a technical assistance cooperationagreement in training and a cooperation agreement on MBA trainingbetween the University of Hawaii and the Hue University ; as wellas a training cooperation agreement between the University ofHawaii and the Foreign Trade University of Vietnam.

On the same day, President Sang and his entourage joined a banquet andan art performance hosted by the US President in honour of APECmembers’ leaders./.
