WIPO Director General vows support for Vietnam

Hanoi (VNA) – DirectorGeneral of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) Francis Gurry vowedto keep assisting Vietnam in intellectual property field at a meeting with Ministerof Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Ngoc Thien in Hanoi on March 22.

Gurry said the improved livingstandards in Asia, including Vietnam, would push cultural industry forward,hence the importance of the serious enforcement of intellectual propertyrights, copyright and related rights, as it will positively impacts the culturalindustry and economic opportunities brought about by the sector.

On the occasion, the guest expressedhis wish that Vietnam would consider joining several WIPO pacts, including theMarrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind,Visually Impaired or Otherwise Print Disabled.

Minister Thien, for his part,informed the guest that the Vietnamese government approved a strategy ondeveloping cultural industries until 2020 with a vision to 2030.

He assured that the Vietnameseconcerned agencies will widely disseminate legal regulations on intellectualproperty, copyright and related rights to the public.

The minister wished that WIPOwould continue providing support for Vietnam in the field, especially in thetraining of quality personnel.

Though Vietnam is yet to join theBeijing Treaty and Marrakesh Treaty, its Law on Intellectual Property containsterms similar to the two treaties.

The Vietnam Composers’Association is the first organisation in the country to establish the VietnamCentre for Protection of Music Copyright. The Association for Protection ofPerforming Artists in Vietnam and the Recording Industry Association of Vietnamwere born later.-VNA
