Young Vietnamese lecturer honoured for winning ASEAN-US science prize

– Dr Nguyen Thi Hiep, alecturer from the Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City, has beenhonoured at the university for winning the first prize at the 2017 ASEAN-USscience competition.

Earlier, the US Mission to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) announced Hiep as the winner of the thirdannual ASEAN-US Science Prize for Women, sponsored by ASEAN, the US Agency forInternational Development (USAID) and UL.

The award ceremony took place in Myanmar city ofNay Pyi Taw on October 19 with the presence of ASEAN science and technologyministers and senior officials.

Dr Hiep, a leading researcher and lecturer at the Biomedical Engineering Facultyof the International University under the Vietnam National University - Ho ChiMinh City, received 20,000 USD for her exceptional research on using at-homehealthcare solutions to reduce pressure placed upon urban healthcaresystems. 

 “Migration from rural to urban areas has put a lot of pressure onhealthcare services in big cities. With ‘smart’ medical devices andbiomaterials, it will be possible to take care of people in their homes,” shesaid.

The 2017 ASEAN-US Science Prize for Women supports promising early-career womenscientists in the ASEAN region and encourages collaboration between ASEANmember states and the US to seek sustainable solutions for urban centers acrossSoutheast Asia.-VNA

The PM revealed Vietnam’s plan to develop nuclear power in the near future, and called on the Swedish side to assist Vietnam in developing and refining legal and policy frameworks for the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes; training and developing human resources; ensuring nuclear safety; and conducting training and drills to improve incident management capabilities.
