Youngest female scientist to receive Kovalevskaya Award
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Lan, Director of the Vietnam National University of Agriculture, has become the youngest woman to receive the Kovalevskaya Award, which honours outstanding female scientists.

Hanoi (VNA) – Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Lan, Director ofthe Vietnam National University of Agriculture, has become the youngest woman toreceive the Kovalevskaya Award, which honours outstanding female scientists.
She was granted the award for 2018 at a ceremonyheld by the Vietnam Women’s Union Central Committee in Hanoi on March 4.
Lan, born in 1974, has obtained remarkableachievements in scientific research.
She has made 105 scientific announcements inVietnam and overseas with many products applied to agriculture, including therapid test kit for the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, alsoknown as blue-ear pig disease; and the microbial product used to make biologicalpadding in livestock farming.
The Kovalevskaya Award 2018 also honoured agroup of female environmental technology scientists at the Faculty ofEnvironmental Science of the University of Science, a member of the VietnamNational University-Hanoi.
They were awarded for many attainments inresearching waste treatment and reuse technologies, and those analysing andassessing environmental quality. Their research findings have helped create asystem for treating dyeing wastewater, a system for treating groundwater withhigh arsenic levels, and biological measures for wastewater treatment.
The award, named after Russian femalemathematician Sofia Kovalevskaya, is presented annually to honour femalescientists with major achievements in scientific research andapplication.
It was first awarded in Vietnam in 1985. TheVietnamese Kovalevskaya Award Committee is currently chaired by formerVietnamese President Nguyen Thi Doan.
To date, 48 individuals and 19 collectives offemale scientists in Vietnam have received the prize. –VNA
A gene therapy for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) study by Assoc. Prof. Dr Tran Van Khanh, which supports prenatal diagnosis of DMD to prevent genetic disorders, has earned the scientist the Kovalevskaya Award 2017.
Dr Nguyen Thi Hiep was selected to be part of the International Rising Talents Programme of the L’Oreal-UNESCO For Women In Science Awards, which were presented on March 21 in Paris, France.
The International Network of Women Engineers and Scientists - Asia and Pacific Nation Network (INWES-APNN) opened its eighth annual meeting in Hanoi on October 18, drawing over 200 female scientists from Asia-Pacific and representatives from the UN, international organisations and some ministries and agencies of Vietnam.
