A 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook Minahasa, Sulawesi, central Indonesia at 7:00 GMT on September 28, according to the United State Geological Survey.
Hanoi (VNA) – A6.1-magnitude earthquake shook Minahasa, Sulawesi, central Indonesia at 7:00GMT on September 28, according to the United State Geological Survey.

The epicentre, with the depth of 18 km,was initially recorded at 0.3976 degrees south latitude and 119.7631 degreeseast longitude.

There was no immediate report of thedeath toll or damage caused by the quake. The Meteorological, Climatologicaland Geophysical Agency of Indonesia said the quake is not likely to trigger atsunami.

Indonesia, one of the mostdisaster-prone nations on earth, straddles the so-called Pacific "Ring ofFire", where tectonic plates collide and many of the world's volcaniceruptions and earthquakes occur.

A number of deadly earthquakes rocked Indonesia's Lombok Island recently,killing at least 555 people.

In 2004, a tsunami triggered by a 9.3-magnitude undersea earthquake off thecoast of Sumatra in western Indonesia killed 220,000 people in countries aroundthe Indian Ocean, including 168,000 in Indonesia.

Most recently, an earthquake measuring6.2 on the Richter scale hit the coast of East Nusa Tenggara province ofIndonesia a month ago. It struck at a shallow depth of eight kilometres, about 100kilometres southeast of Kupang – the province’s capital city. –VNA
