APEC economies discuss responsible use of resources

Can Tho(VNA) – Vietnamese Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha hasstressed the need to strengthen cooperation with the private sector as well asleading businesses and corporations to make them key partners in helping APEC economiesbuild capacity for production rehabilitation and resilience to climate change.
Ha was addressing theMinisters and CEOs Dialogue on Responsible Use of Resources to EnhanceSustainable Food Production and Agri-Business in the Mekong Delta city of CanTho on August 24 as part of the APEC Food Security Week.
The participation ofthe business community has facilitated the Vietnamese Government to mobilisevarious social resources, including human resources with high qualificationsand expertise, and diversified financial resources for infrastructure investmentand services, he said.
“Without the activeengagement of the private sector, all Government efforts will be in vain,” hesaid.
The public-privatepartnership (PPP) model has brought long term benefits, maximised performanceof both public and private sectors while creating andspreading synergies and mobilise social resources, he stressed.
The minister pointedout the fact that natural resources such as land, water, forest and sea arebecoming more and more exhausted due to the rapid population growth and massiveurbanisation.
The rapid increase interms of both frequency and intensity of weather extremes as well as otheruncertainties have challenged the regional and global development, the ministersaid.
To acknowledge thepractical benefits of this model, over the past years, Vietnam has made greatefforts to develop and consolidate an “enabling environment providingincentives for PPP development”.
Vietnam will scale upthe existing model to significantly contributing to the development of asustainable, responsible and quality agricultural sector, the minister added.
Delegates at the eventfocused discussions on responsible use of resources to secure long-term foodproduction and high return for value chain stakeholders, and the role of publicand private sectors in sustainable food production and processing.-VNA
