ASEAN promotes economic ties with Spain

Hanoi (VNA) – A delegation of the ASEAN Committee in Madrid (ACM) led byVietnamese Ambassador to Spain Ngo Tien Dung, who is also President of the ACMin 2019, visited the Spanish region of Basque from April 1-4.

Thetrip aims to promote relations between Basque and member countries of theAssociation of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), study the local market, andseek cooperation opportunities between all sides.

Ata working session with President of the Basque region Lehendakari Inigo UrkulluRenteria and Speaker of the Basque Parliament Tejeria Otermin, Dung briefedthem on ASEAN’s current affairs, as well as potential and opportunities forcooperation with the bloc.

Theambassador noted his wish for stronger cooperation between localities of ASEANmember countries and Basque, as well as between ASEAN countries and Spainacross all spheres, especially in trade and investment.

Basque’sleaders affirmed the intention to enhance all-round collaboration with ASEANcountries, particularly in the areas Basque holds strengths in, like the autoindustry, aviation, environment, industrial design, machinery, and technology.

Withinthe trip, the Madrid embassies of ASEAN countries worked with Basque’s Chamberof Commerce and Investment to organise a conference on trade and investmentpromotion in ASEAN. The conference was held in the city of Bilbao, the economiccentre of Basque, on April 2.

Theevent – which brought together more than 50 leading businesses of Basque – answeredthe demands of Spanish enterprises interested in investment and businessopportunities in Asia, especially Southeast Asia.

AmbassadorDung and Trade Counsellor of Vietnam Nguyen Duc Thuong introduced Vietnam’s economicpotential and the industries in which the country is calling for investment,especially those which overlap with areas that businesses in Spain andparticularly Bilbao hold strengths in, like urban development, energy, andagriculture.

Theyalso spoke of opportunities that the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA)would generate for businesses of both sides.

Onthe occasion, Dung attended a working session on investment in Vietnam within theWindEurope Conference and Exhibition which was held in Bilbao from April 2-4.

Theambassador highlighted Vietnam’s prioritisation of the development of renewableenergy, particularly wind power.

SeveralVietnamese and Spanish firms operating in Vietnam also shared information andexperience in wind power development in the Southeast Asian nation. –VNA
