Bangkok (NNT/VNA) - The 14th meetingof the ASEAN Working Group on Halal Food (AWGHF) is taking place at the AlMeroz Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand, from July 10 to 12.
Dr. Somchuan Ratanamangklanon, Deputy Director General of the Department ofLivestock Development of Thailand, chaired the 14th AWGHF which was attended byrepresentatives of the Halal Accredited Authority from 10 ASEAN membercountries including Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia,Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam who met to discuss theGeneral Guidelines on Halal Food and the ASEAN Halal Food Website.
The 14th AWGHF meeting also drew attentionto the Thailand Halal Livestock 2018 which is a presentation of the Departmentof Livestock Development in collaboration with the National Bureau ofAgricultural Commodity and Food Standards, the Central Islamic Council ofThailand and the Halal Science Centre of Chulalongkorn University. Theexhibition demonstrates the potential of Thailand’s Halal industry.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Winai Dahlan, Director ofthe Halal Science Centre Chulalongkorn University, pointed out that this eventis a good way to prepare ASEAN to be the Halal food Hub, meaning that Halalproducts will be distributed worldwide, for example to Arab or Middle Easterncountries and other regions like Europe and America. Ultimately, ASEAN canbecome the leader in Halal food production.
Dr. Somchuan said that Thailand receives alarge number of tourists each year especially tourists from Muslim countries.Having Halal food while traveling is therefore an important requirement forMuslim tourists. Halal food will always comply with two essential points whichare Food hygiene and Islamic permission. The Department of Livestock Developmenttherefore plans to support the livestock products of Thailand being certified“Halal” for domestic consumption while also increasing the volume of livestockexport products.-NNT/VNA
