Authorities repatriate over 600 citizens lured to work illegally in Cambodia
The Foreign Ministry and Vietnam’s representative agencies in Cambodia have coordinated with the two countries’ authorities to safely repatriate over 600 citizens who had been tricked or lured to Cambodia for illegal work so far.

Hanoi (VNA) – The ForeignMinistry and Vietnam’s representative agencies in Cambodia have coordinatedwith the two countries’ authorities to safely repatriate over 600 citizens who had been tricked or lured to Cambodia for illegal work so far.
The agencies are also verifyingpersonal information of some people rescued by the Cambodian side and will helpthem return home soon.
Under the Foreign Ministry’sdirection, the representative agencies of Vietnam in Cambodia have worked withlocal authorities to assist and rescue Vietnamese nationals tricked orlured to work illegally there, and asked Cambodia not to impose administrativefines on these persons.
The ministry’s Consular Departmenthas also proposed domestic agencies and localities bordering Cambodia applymechanisms for quick verification and reception of the rescued citizens.
The Foreign Ministry andrepresentative agencies are keeping a close watch on the situation ofVietnamese workers in Cambodia. They are also coordinating with the countries’authorities to swiftly receive information, rescue, carry out citizenprotection measures, and repatriate the ones tricked or lured to work illegallyabroad.
On September 1, border guards of theMekong Delta province of An Giang and relevant forces received 26 Vietnamesecitizens handed over by Cambodian authorities at the Tinh Bien InternationalBorder Gate.
Lt.Col. Tran Hoa Hiep, head of the border guard post at the Tinh BienInternational Border Gate, said the group consist of three women and 23 men,including 11 related to the Rich World casino, from which many workers strivedto flee to Vietnam on August 18.
OnAugust 18, 40 people, comprising 35 men and five women, escaped from the RichWorld casino, located in Sampeou Poun commune of Kaoh Thom district in Cambodia’sKandal province, and swam across the Binh Ghi River to illegally return toVietnam.
Apartfrom them, one died from drowning on the river and one was captured by casinoguards.
Theysaid they were forced to toil and not paid, so they decided to flee to Vietnam.
Investigatingthe case, police have uncovered four rings showing signs of human traffickingin some localities.
AnGiang police have detained and started legal proceedings against one woman and one man on thecharge of arranging illegal exit for other people./.
The Vietnamese Embassy in Cambodia held a working session with the Immigration Management Department under the Cambodian Ministry of Home Affairs’ General Department of Immigration on August 22 following a case related to a group of 40 Vietnamese workers that fled a casino in Cambodia’s Kandal province on August 18 and other similar cases.
Spokeswoman of the Foreign Ministry Le Thi Thu Hang on August 25 updated the media on the issue that many Vietnamese people had been tricked to work illegally in Cambodia.
Cambodia authorities had rescued some 865 foreigners from human trafficking in 87 cases from January 1 to August 20, 2022, Deputy Minister and Minister of the Interior Sar Kheng said on August 26.
The National Police of Cambodia has announced the setting up of a special hotline to receive cases of alleged illegal detention in Vietnamese, English and Chinese languages.
The Border Guard Command of Dak Nong province and the military sub-region of Cambodia’s Mondulkiri province held talks in the Central Highlands locality of Vietnam on August 31 to review their 2021 coordination and devise orientations for this year.
