Cambodia arrests four suspects in building collapse

A court of Sihanoukville has issued arrest warrants for four suspects involved in the collapse of a seven-storey building in Preah Sihanouk province on June 22 that has led to heavy casualties.

Phnom Penh (VNA) – A court of Cambodia's Sihanoukville hasissued arrest warrants for four suspects involved in the collapse of aseven-storey building in Preah Sihanouk province on June 22 that has led toheavy casualties.

The suspects are Chinese nationals, consistingof the building owner, the person in charge of construction, the contractor andthe construction site manager. They were charged with unintentional homicide.

The search and rescue work concluded on lateJune 24. The bodies of 28 victims were found while 26 workers were seriouslyinjured.

The Cambodian Government has offered 70,000 USDas support to the family of each dead victim. Meanwhile, each injured one willreceive 10,000 USD.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said at a pressconference in Sihanoukville on June 24 that authorised agencies willinvestigate the cause of the collapse as well as the legality of theconstruction.

This is the most deadly building collapse in Cambodiain recent years. Prime Minister Hun Sen dismissed a number of high-rankingofficials following the incident.-VNA
