Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodia’s fourth senateelection was held on February 25 at 33 polling stations across the country.

Some 11,670 out of 11,695 voters or 99.79 percent went tovote, according to the National Election Committee’s preliminary statistics releasedat a press conference the same day.

The NEC said that the election took place in a stableenvironment, without demonstrations or disorder.

A total of 276 observers from 12 non-governmentalorganisations monitored the election.

Four parties took part in the vote, including the CambodianPeople’s Party (CPP), the Funcinpec Party (FCP), the Cambodian Youth Party(CYP) and the Khmer National United Party (KNUP).

The CPP currently holds 79 parliamentary seats and 11,051commune seats. The Senate has 62 seats, but the vote was held for 58 seatsonly, as two senators will be appointed by King Norodom Sihamoni and two othersby the National Assembly.

The election’s preliminary result is expected to be releasedon February 25 night while its official result is scheduled to be announced onMarch 3. If there are complaints, it will be uncovered the next day.

At the previous election held in January 2012, the CPP won46 out of 61 seats.-VNA
