Cambodian PM joins election campaign for first time

PhnomPenh (VNA) - Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen attendedthe Cambodian People's Party (CPP)'s election campaign parade on June 2, thefinal day of its two-week campaign for the June 4 commune-level elections.
Itwas the first time in 24 years that the PM, who is also the CPP's president,directly took part in an election campaign.
Addressingthe rally, Hun Sen said only the CPP has sufficient capacity to govern Cambodiaand maintain the country's peace and development.
Hestressed that he will not allow any hostile group to destroy the nation’speace.
Afterthe speech, Hun Sen rode in an open truck to lead a 9-km march of approximately200,000 supporters through streets in Phnom Penh.
Themain opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) was also expected to holda rally in the eastern part of Phnom Penh on the afternoon of the same day.
Accordingto the Cambodia National Election Committee (NEC), 12 political parties will runin the commune-level elections, which will choose commune chiefs and councilorsfor the country's 1,646 communes. About 7.87 million eligible voters areexpected to cast their ballots.
Inthe last commune elections in June 2012, the ruling CPP gained 61.9 percent ofthe votes, compared to some 30.6 percent for the opposition.-VNA
