Can Tho (VNA) – The Mekong Delta City of Can Tho is calling for investment from Indian businesses across key sectors, including IT, high-tech agriculture, the processing industry, and education, heard a meeting on March 17 between the municipal authorities and a visiting delegation from the Indian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City.

During discussions, Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Truong Canh Tuyen talked about existing cooperation between the two sides, built upon over five decades of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and India.

In 2023, the city signed a cooperation agreement with the consulate general aimed at strengthening collaboration in various fields, particularly education, culture, arts, IT, tourism, trade, and investment promotion. In 2024, the Indian Government provided a grant of 50,000 USD to support a rural bridge construction project in Can Tho.

However, Tuyen noted that trade and investment cooperation between the city and Indian partners remains below potential. At present, Can Tho hosts no Indian-funded foreign direct investment (FDI) projects, and last year, its exports to India stood at 4.26 million USD.

The municipal leader urged Indian Consul General Vipra Pandey to encourage Indian enterprises to invest in the city, particularly in IT, high-tech farming, processing industries, and education.

The Indian Consul General stated that, given India’s strengths and Can Tho’s needs, both sides should intensify efforts to organise exhibitions and trade fairs in the near future to attract investors to the aforementioned sectors.

He said in the field of science and technology alone, both sides should strengthen cooperation in technology transfer, mastery, and development. Priority areas include biotechnology, high-tech agriculture, innovation and patents, mechanical engineering, environmental technology, advanced medical diagnostic equipment, clean energy, electronics, and semiconductors.

🎐 As part of the delegation’s activities in Can Tho, there is a friendship tree-planting ceremony on March 17–18. Two free screenings of Indian films at Nam Can Tho University for students and local residents are also scheduled./.
