CanTho (VNA) - Authorities ofthe Mekong Delta city of Can Tho announced a plan to increase urbanresilience at a ceremony in the localityon June 19.
Itwas jointly organised by the municipal People’s Committee and the US-based Rockefeller Foundation’s 100Resilient Cities Network (100RC).
Lauren Sorkin, Regional Co-Director for Asia and Pacific of the 100RC, said CanTho plays a leading role in promoting resilience in the Mekong Delta region,adding that the plan shows the city’s effort and attention to challenges, aswell as its response action.
Under the plan, to withstand extreme situations, the city will roll out solutionsto reduce the fill-up of canals, and propose regulations to protect thesespaces and develop new public spaces.
Soft solutions such as green infrastructure will be taken to reduce flooding,hot weather, and improve the water quality.
Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Dao Anh Dung said the plan providesnew approaches, ways of thinking and knowledge to connect locals and the municipalauthorities, towards a common goal of building a stronger Can Tho city withgreen, dynamic and sustainable development.
The “100 resilient cities” network aims to helpworldwide cities to develop plans and prepare their communities to better copewith and recover from shocks, tensions and disasters in the 21st century.
The 100RC programme will help Can Tho improve the local living standards,facilitate business and investment, evaluate the impact of pressure and shocksto society, economics, culture and environment in the middle and long terms.-VNA
