Chile wishes to strengthen Pacific Alliance-ASEAN ties

Buenos Aires(VNA) – Chile, the pro tempore president of the Pacific Alliance, will promote bilateralties between the grouping and ASEAN during the visit of President Michelle Bacheletto Indonesia next week.

Bachelet will beginher state visit to the Southeast Asian nation, a member of ASEAN, after takingpart in an international forum in China on May 14, the Chilean Ministry ofForeign Affairs said in a statement.

The president willattend an ASEAN-Pacific Alliance business forum to promote the ComprehensiveEconomic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between ten ASEAN member states and six freetrade partners, namely Australia, China, India, Japan, the Republic of Koreaand New Zealand.

During the visit, Bacheletis scheduled to hold talks with her Indonesian counterpart Joko Widodo todiscuss ways to boost the two countries’ bilateral relations.

Founded in 2011, thePacific Alliance, including Colombia, Chile, Mexico and Peru, is the world’s 9th largest economy with export turnover estimated at 445 billion USD per year.

Its GDP accounted for approximately 40 percent of that of the LatinAmerica and grew at about 4 percent in average annually.

Meanwhile, the ASEANgathers 10 Southeast Asian countries - 10 members: Brunei,Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore,Thailand and Vietnam, with a total population of about 625 million people and acombined GDP of approximately 2.5 billion USD.-VNA
