CHOBA project continues improving rural sanitation

TraVinh (VNA) – The second phase of the Community Hygiene Output-BasedAid (CHOBA2) Programme was reviewed in Tra Vinh on April 20.

Theproject, worth nearly 9.5 billion VND (418,000 USD) started in the Mekong Deltaprovinces of Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, the central province of Thanh Hoa and thenorthern provinces of Hoa Binh and Ninh Binh from September 1, 2016.

Theproject, funded by the East Meets West (EMW) foundation aims to encourage35,000 rural households in the localities to build sanitary toilets in linewith Health Ministry standards to improve public health. So far, some 6,400households have built standard toilets.

Accordingto Tran Thi Huong, Vice President of Vietnam Women’s Union, the first phase ofthe CHOBA project, worth over 97.5 billion VND (4.29 million USD), also fundedby the EMW foundation, was implemented from 2012 to 2016, benefiting 110,825households in 10 provinces.

In Tra Vinh,the CHOBA2 is being implemented in 30 communes in the districts of Tra Cu, TieuCan, Cang Long, and Cau Ke, with 7,500 households involved.

Tu ThiRiem from the provincial Women’s Union said the Project Management Board,together with local authorities and relevant sectors have updated thedisbursement from the Bank for Social Policy – Tra Vinh branch.

Technicalassistance has been provided to help households build sanitary toilets. So far,more than 1,700 households in the province have built toilets under theprogramme.

LuongThi Hoa, Vice President of the Thanh Hoa provincial Women’s Union said, the CHOBA2project has received support from local authorities at all levels.

The poorand near-poor households in Ha Trung district received aid of one million VND(44 USD) each, sourced from the district’s budget to build toilets. They alsoreceived other assistance from communal level.
