The death toll from a strong earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia’s Central Sulawesi province has climbed to 832, and the figure is expected to increase, said according to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) on September 30.

Jakarta (VNA) - The death toll from a strong earthquake and tsunamiin Indonesia’s Central Sulawesi province has climbed to 832, said according tothe National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) on September 30.

The figure is expected to increase, the agency added.

Almost those killed in natural disaster on September 28 were in the hard-hitcity of Palu.

Earlier, the BNPB and the Indonesian National Institute of Aeronautics andSpace (LAPAN) said that satellite pictures with high resolution will be used tostudy and assess heaviest impacts caused by the September 28 earthquake andtsunami in Sulawesi.

Suwelasi was ravaged by two quakes measuring 6.1 and 7.5 on the Richter scale onSeptember 28. A tsunami happened after the second quake hit the area in theafternoon of the same day.

A series of earthquakes in July and August killed nearly 500 people on theholiday island of Lombok, hundreds of kilometres southwest of Sulawesi.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and is regularly hit by earthquakes.In 2004, a big earthquake off the northern Indonesian island of Sumatratriggered a tsunami across the Indian Ocean, killing 220,000 people in 13countries, including more than 168,000 in Indonesia.-VNA
