Death toll in Indonesia’s flash floods rises to 19

Hanoi (VNA) – Nineteen people were killed, and seven injured in Indonesia’s North Maluku province one August 26 after flash floods and landslides struck the locality a day earlier, authorities said.

According to the Disaster Management and Mitigation Office in the province, the bodies of the 19 victims had been discovered, while rescue work has been accelerated with the support of heavy machinery.

The disasters also damaged houses and infrastructure.

The local administration declared a 14-day emergency status in the disaster-affected areas to facilitate the relief efforts.

Lieutenant General Shuharyanto, head of the National Disaster Management Agency, visited the impacted sites to ensure that disaster response efforts were proceeding effectively.
