Bangkok (VNA) -Sen. Lieut. Gen. Phan Van Giang, Chief of the General Staff of the VietnamPeople’s Army and Deputy Defence Minister, highlighted defence cooperation asone of the important pillars of the Vietnam-Thailand relations.

At a meeting with Gen. PrawitWongsuwon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of Thailand, in Bangkok on November 23, Giang applauded Thailand’simportant role in maintaining solidarity and development in the Association ofSoutheast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The officer noted his beliefthat Thailand willsuccessfully assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2019 and urged the country toshare its experience with Vietnamwhich will take over the position in 2020.

Extending greetings ofVietnamese Defence Minister Gen. Ngo Xuan Lich to Gen. Prawit Wongsuwon, Giangsaid the Vietnamese minister hopes to welcome Gen. Prawit Wongsuwon in Hanoi atan earliest date to discuss issues regarding the bilateral defence ties.

Giang expressed his beliefthat Gen. Prawit Wongsuwon will continue to create favourable conditions forcollaboration in military and national defence between the two countries.

In reply, Gen. PrawitWongsuwon said Giang’s visit will contribute to consolidating and developingthe bilateral strategic partnership.

The host also said he wantsto pay an official visit to Vietnamto discuss issues of shared concern.

While in Thailand, Giang held talks withGen. Pornpipat Benyasri, Chief of Defence Forces of the Royal Thai Armed Forces,during which the two sides agreed to increase the exchange of delegations,including young officers, and enhance cooperation in training and air and navalforces, while seeking collaboration possibilities between the two armies.

They believed that withpolitical will and resolve displayed by leaders of the two countries and armies,the bilateral defence ties will make new progress, bringing pragmatic benefitsto both sides.
