Earth Hour campaign kicks off in Hanoi (Source: kinhtedothi.vn )
Hanoi (VNA) - A campaign to respond to the Earth Hour was launched in Hanoi onMarch 10, sending the message “saving energy, protecting earth”.
The Earth Hour campaign in Vietnam is an annual activity held during the past11 years. It is hosted by the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT), with thesupport of many businesses, especially the Electricity of Vietnam (EVN), whichserves as the sponsor of the campaign.
The campaign is one of the actions of the Vietnamese Government and people,demonstrating their commitment to joining hands with the world in the fightagainst climate change.
In 2009, Vietnam had only six provinces and cities across the countryparticipating in the campaign, but now this event is joined by many localitiesnationwide, as well as organisations and businesses.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, Director of the MoIT’s Energy Saving and Sustainable Development Department Nguyen Thi LamGiang called on organisations, individuals, families and enterprises to takespecific actions against climate change.
Vo Quang Lam, EVN Deputy Director, said all employees of the group willactively respond to the Earth Hour campaign 2019 with many practicalactivities.
He said turning off lighting equipment in the Earth Hour event not only remindspeople of saving energy but also aims at an important goal - protecting theenvironment and adapting to climate change, adding that each small action willbring in great efficiency and actions of each person will contribute toprotecting the earth.
The programme’s organising board said during March 2019, many meaningfulactivities such as exchange programmes, workshops, art exhibitions, and a lightturning-off ceremony will be held within the framework of the campaign.
The Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organised bythe World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It has been described as thelargest world grassroots movement for the environment, with the involvement ofaround 7,000 cities in 172 countries and territories so far.
In Vietnam, activities responding to the EarthHour are coordinated by the Ministry of Industry and Trade with the support ofthe Electricity of Vietnam (EVN). The EVN has been the main sponsor of theEarth Hour movement in the country for 10 consecutive years, since Vietnamjoined the campaign in 2009.-VNA
Over 1,000 people came together at the walking and painting events held on the pedestrian streets around Hoan Kiem (Returned Sword) Lake, Hanoi on March 17 in response to the Earth Hour 2018.
The Electricity of Vietnam of Hanoi (EVN Hanoi) has carried out activities in response to Earth Hour 2018, aiming to raise public awareness of energy saving.
Hanoi will respond to the 2019 Earth Hour with a series of activities which begin on March 9 and culminate in an event from 20:00 to 21:30 on March 30 at the Cach Mang Thang Tam Square in the city’s downtown Hoan Kiem district.
The programmes have brought about positive changes to rural infrastructure, comprehensively improved the material and spiritual lives of farmers, and contributed to Vietnam's economic restructuring, said PM Pham Minh Chinh.
The festival highlighted the contributions and robust development of Vietnam's revolutionary press over the past century while promoting press products and showcasing the creativity of Vietnamese journalists.
The programme on sustainable poverty reduction has achieved its annual targets for reducing the poverty rate as assigned by the National Assembly and the Government. It has fulfilled five specific objectives and five five-year goals, and met nine out of 12 indicators related to addressing basic social service shortages.
