Abu Dhabi (VNA) –The 11th Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament opened in Abu Dhabi, thecapital city of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on December 12 with theparticipation of 50 female parliamentarians.
Speaking at the event, Speaker ofthe UAE Federal National Council A. Al Qubaisi said the event brings togetherleaders of parliament, ministers, scientists in the private sector andcommunity leaders.
She hailed top femalelegislators’ important role in shaping their future and protecting the interestof the people and future generations.
Al Qubaisi also called for jointactions to address challenges involving protectionism and globalisation andaffirmed that the summit reflects confidence in achieving set visions.
President of theInter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) S. Chowdhury recalled that the first summit ofthis kind was held in 2005 with 19 delegates taking part, adding that femaleparliamentarians contribute to policymaking to change the world.
He asked for thoroughpreparations to coordinate efforts against world challenges such as povertyreduction, anti-terrorism and many other important issues.
At the opening session,participants listened to a message of United Nations Secretary General BanKi-moon, and speeches delivered by UAE Deputy Prime Minister cum Minister ofInterior Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Dr. AhmedEl-Tayeb, which highlighted the role of women in the world’s people-electedbodies in improving people’s lives, promoting fairness and issuing policies forsustainable development.
National Assembly ChairwomanNguyen Thi Kim Ngan is scheduled to present speeches at thematic sessions.
The summit, which will run untilDecember 13, aims to promote female participation in politics and preventviolence against women and children.
Themed “United for Shaping theFuture”, this year’s event will discuss the role of women parliament speakersin addressing challenges to social progress and prosperity./.
