Hanoi pardons 145 prisoners ahead of Lunar New Year
Hanoi will reduce the jail terms of and release 145 prisoners ahead of schedule on the occasion of the Lunar New Year, which will come in a little over a week.

Hanoi (VNA)🐭 – Hanoi will reduce the jail terms of and release 145 prisoners ahead of schedule on the occasion of the Lunar New Year, which will come in a little over a week.
The capital city’s amnesty consideration council announced the decision on January 29.
Fifty-two of the clemency beneficiaries will be freed ahead of their set release date, while the remaining will have their jail terms cut down by between one and seven months. They were confirmed to have had good conduct while in prison.
At a recent ceremony, Colonel Chu Xuan Tho from Temporary Detention Station No.1 of Hanoi’s Department of Public Security congratulated the pardoned prisoners.
He added that he hopes the others, who are still serving their sentences, will continue their correction efforts so as to receive amnesty in the future.-VNA
Clemency was granted to 416 inmates at Dong Son Prison in central Quang Binh province on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of national reunification.
Clemency will be granted to around 16,000 – 17,000 prisoners on the occasion of the 70 th National Day (September 2), making it the biggest-ever, said Head of the General Department for Enforcement of Criminal Sentences and Judicial Assistance Nguyen Ngoc Bang on July 20.
The President’s Decision on Amnesty was announced at a press conference in Hanoi on Aug. 28 on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19) and National Day (September 2).
As many as 285 domestic and 14 foreign inmates at the Thanh Xuan detention camp in Hanoi were freed on August 31 under the President’s Decision on Amnesty.
The programmes have brought about positive changes to rural infrastructure, comprehensively improved the material and spiritual lives of farmers, and contributed to Vietnam's economic restructuring, said PM Pham Minh Chinh.
