Indonesia criticises US’s plan to move embassy to Jerusalem

Indonesia has condemned a decision by the United States to move its embassy from Israel’s Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in May.
Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia has condemned a decision by the UnitedStates to move its embassy from Israel’s Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in May.

Inhis meeting with US Ambassador to Indonesia Joseph Donovan on February 26,Indonesia’s Deputy Foreign Minister A.M. Fachir stressed that the decisionviolates the United Nations’ resolutions and will affect the ongoing peaceprocess in the Middle East.

Earlier,the foreign ministry summoned Ambassador Donovan after the US Department ofState issued a statement revealing its plan to move its embassy from Tel Avivto Jerusalem in May, which will coincide with Israel's 70th anniversary of itsindependence.

PresidentDonald Trump announced the United States' formal recognition of Jerusalem asthe capital of Israel in December 2017, sparking international condemnation,including from Indonesia.

All57 member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, includingIndonesia, issued a communiqué in December calling on the United States torevoke its decision to recognise Jerusalem as capital of Israel.

Thedecision also led to an emergency meeting of the United Nations GeneralAssembly on December 21, which saw 128 countries defy the US and calling on itto withdraw its declaration on Jerusalem.

Indonesiais a steadfast supporter for the establishment of an independent state ofPalestine with its capital in East Jerusalem. The nation with the world'slargest Muslim population supports two-state solution that enables Israeli andPalestinian people live harmoniously side by side.-VNA
