Indonesia, Japan explore business opportunities with new MoUs

Cooperation between Indonesia and Japan is expected to strengthen and yield mutual benefits in the near future, according to an Indonesian trade official.

Jakarta (VNA) ൲– Indonesian and Japanese enterprises signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) valued at 200.8 million USD at a recent Indonesia – Japan business forum held in Osaka.

In a statement from Jakarta on June 13, Indonesian Deputy Minister of Trade Dyah Roro Esti emphasised that cooperation between the two countries is expected to strengthen and yield mutual benefits in the near future. Indonesia’s Ministry of Trade has pledged to facilitate and support collaboration among stakeholders, particularly small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
A total of 13 MoUs were agreed upon at the forum, covering sectors such as paper, wood pellets, seafood, chocolate, rattan decorations, wooden furniture, coffee beans, charcoal, labour, and biomass business development. Indonesia has demonstrated strong economic resilience, with its economy growing by 4.87% in the first quarter of 2025 and per capita income reaching 4,900 USD in 2024. Foreign investment also saw a significant 20.8% rise in 2024 compared to the previous year. Roro Esti noted that bilateral trade between Indonesia and Japan offers vast market potential across various sectors.
Non-oil and gas exports from Indonesia to Japan increased by 8.8% over the past five years. Last year, Indonesia’s top exports to Japan included coal, representing 15.8% of Indonesia’s global exports, nickel (5.52%), and electric conductors (4.07%). Its non-oil and gas imports from the Northeast Asian country rose nearly 8.25% in the same period, with major imports being metal products, motor vehicles, and copper. The Deputy Minister also highlighted Indonesia’s openness to partnership in strategic areas, notably green energy and sustainable products. With strong environmental commitments, Indonesia is poised to become a key partner for Japan in building green supply chains and promoting regional energy transition./.
