Kids in Binh Duong learn about nutrition, physical development
More than 10,000 students in 12 primary schools in the south-eastern province of Binh Duong attended a programme on nutrition education and physical development which ended on October 2.

Binh Duong (VNA)- More than 10,000 students in 12 primary schools in the south-eastern provinceof Binh Duong attended a programme on nutrition education and physicaldevelopment which ended on October 2.
The programme, which beganon August 28, was held by the province Health Education and CommunicationCentre in co-operation with dairy company FrieslandCampina Vietnam.
Educational experts andnutritionists from the centre and company taught the students the basics ofproper nutrition and exercising and told them about the benefits of drinkingmilk.
A child should drink twoglasses of milk every day and have physical activities for one hour forcomprehensive physical and intellectual development, the experts said.
The students were alsotaught that they should not skip a single meal. They should eat three propermeals every day comprising all four groups of essential nutrients, namelycarbohydrates, protein, fat, and vitamins, they were told.
This knowledge wasinstilled through interesting talks and plays, with the talks ending with flashmobs.
The programme also provided10,000 glasses of milk to the attending students.
The programme on nutritioneducation and physical development was aimed at reducing the rates ofmalnutrition and obesity among pre-school and school-aged children.
It also hoped to prevent adeficiency of calcium and micronutrients in the children.
It also helped improvetheir awareness and habits.
The programme was held aspart of a campaign called Nutrition-Exercising-Healthy initiated byFrieslandCampina Vietnam based on the concept of daily diet, nutrition andexercise affecting a child greatly.
According to a survey onnutrition in Southeast Asia conducted by FrieslandCampina Vietnam inco-operation with Vietnam’s National Institute of Nutrition, more than 50 percentof children under 12 do not get enough calcium, vitamins A, B1 and C and ironfrom their daily meals and drinks.
A shortage of vitamin D toopersists though the country gets a lot of sunshine.
While rural areas have aproblem of malnutrition and shortage of micronutrients, obesity and overweightare on an upward trend in urban areas.

A school milk programme in the central province of Nghe An has helped cut malnutrition among children, especially those under five years-old, according to the provincial People’s Committee.
