Kien Giang (VNA)🥃 – The Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang on April 25 announced the completion of its programme to eliminate makeshift and dilapidated houses for poor and near-poor households, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975–2025).
Accordingly, Kien Giang has completed the construction and repair of 3,618 houses, with a total investment of over 213 billion VND (nearly 8.20 million USD), helping the disadvantaged improve their living conditions with safe and sturdy homes — laying the foundation for a stable and better life.
Secretary of the provincial Party Committee Nguyen Tien Hai attributed the result to the strong determination and concerted efforts by the entire political system, along with strong support from organisations, businesses, donors, armed forces, the youth union, and the people.
Notably, police and military officers contributed over 10,000 workdays to help build 1,000 houses for local residents. The districts of Giong Rieng, Kien Luong, and Chau Thanh, and Rach Gia and Ha Tien cities showed strong initiatives to complete the programme ahead of schedule.
Hai called on the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee in Kien Giang and its member organisations to build on the programme’s achievements by regularly reviewing and updating data on poor and near-poor households, especially those in remote areas, to ensure timely support and no one is left behind./.
According to the steering committee’s report, a total of 7,064 local households require support, comprising 5,831 in need of new construction and 1,233 repairs, with an estimated total cost of nearly 387 billion VND (approximately 14.9 million USD).
This nationwide drive is part of an ongoing emulation campaign launched by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and calling for concerted efforts to eliminate substandard houses by the end of this year.
