- The 3rd session of the Lao National Assembly, 8th tenure, opened inVientiane on April 25 under the chair of NA Chairwoman Pany Yathotou.

In her opening speech, Chairwoman Yathotou highlightedthe significance of the event as the country is implementing the Resolution of theParty Central Committee’s 4th plenary meeting and the Resolution of theNA’s 2nd session on national plans on socio-economic development andbudget in 2017.

The chairwoman stressed that Laos has overcomea range of difficulties and challenges to achieve positive results in manyfields, especially in ensuring political stability and social order, and stabilisingmacro economy. The implementation of the budget plan in 2016 and the firstquarter of 2017 was improved, she added.

Chairwoman Yathotou said this session will discuss a number of national issues,including the government’s operations in the first half of 2017 andorientations for the coming time, plans on socio-economic development, the implementationof the State budget plan and management of goods prices.

The legislature will also hear a report on the performance of the State AuditCommittee over the past five years (2012-2016) and its plan for 2017-2021, andelect the committee’s chairperson.

The legislators will debate and approve amendments to a number of laws coveringpeople’s procuracy, court, water and water resources, statistics, electricity, youthunion, people’s security force and NA election.

They will also deliberating new bills relatedto online information management, art performance, and international conventionand agreement, alongside with giving opinions and passing a penal law and a lawon provincial-level people councils.

The meeting is scheduled to last until May 28.-VNA
