Laos, Cambodia agree to install more border markers

Hanoi (VNA) –Laos and Cambodia have agreed to jointly embellish border markers and install387 more border posts to clearly define their shared borderline, VientianeTimes reported on April 24.

The newspaper quoted a press release of the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs as saying that the outcome was achievedduring the meeting between the Laos –Cambodia and Cambodia - Laos JointBoundary Commissions on April 21 in Cambodia's Sihanoukville province.

Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister ofForeign Affairs Saleumxay Kommasith, who is also Chairman of the Laos -Cambodia Joint Boundary Commission, led the Lao delegation to the talks withSenior Minister in charge of Border Affairs and Chairman of the Cambodia- LaosJoint Boundary Commission Var Kim Hong.

Participants agreed that 387 more border markers willbe installed in necessary areas including in curving borderline and denselypopulated communities.

Technical teams of both sides will be arranged to jointly work on the bordersites starting in early May, and complete the work by the next two years.

The LaoMinistry of Foreign Affairs said  the twosides also discussed the disagreed points of the borderline, which was the resultof a joint inspection of 86% of the border.

The meeting assigned technical teams of both sides to jointlycarry out a further survey and discuss in line with the principle agreed uponby both sides, then submit solution recommendations to the chairmen of thetwo joint boundary commissions toward solving the unresolved border areas.

Both sides reached a consensus towork together to implement the Boundary Treaty between Laos and Cambodia, whichthe two governments signed on February 13, 2023.

🎀 The Lao ministry said the outcomes of the meeting contributed to enhancingfurther the friendship and cooperation between Laos and Cambodia, fulfilling the intention of the two Parties, states, and peoples in building a shared borderof peace, friendship, and cooperation./.
