Malaysia, Thailand step up border security cooperation

Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand’s media on September 19 said Prime Minister PrayutChan-ocha suggested Malaysia cooperate in restoring peace and order in Thailand’ssouthernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat.

At a meeting withMalaysia’s senior officials last week, including Finance Deputy Minister DatukSeri Johari bin Abdul Ghani, PM Prayut stressed that security in thesouthernmost provinces is important to national security and development ofThailand.

On September 14, at the 106th meeting of the Committee for Thailand-Malaysiaborder area in Penang, Malaysia, the two sides agreed to boost joint patrols toenhance the efficiency of handling the two countries’ national security issues.

The Malaysian side agreed with the Thai side on dispatching border policemenand military officers to patrol the shared border. Both hoped that the activitywill help deter drug trafficking, smuggling and cross-border crimes.-VNA
