Malaysian navy rescues tourists stranded on Tioman island

The Royal Malaysian Navy has been deployed to rescue 93 tourists stuck on Tioman island following bad weather and rough seas.

Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – The RoyalMalaysian Navy has been deployed to rescue 93 tourists stuck on Tioman islandfollowing bad weather and rough seas.

A total of 54 foreign tourists and 39 local tourists have been stranded on theisland, off the east coast of Johor state, since January 11.

Tioman assemblyman Johari Hussain said navyship KD Terengganu arrived on the island at 10pm on January 15.

The tourists will be transferred from themarina on January 16, he said, adding that seven locals will also be allowed toboard the ship.

The monsoon season in Tioman island startsfrom October to March every year.

Johari Hussain said when the monsoon seasonstarts, the Government constantly reminds people of the situation and the riskthat they may face on the island.

During this period, fewer tourists visit theisland due to the weather but there are those who take the risk to go to Tiomanwith the hope that they would be able to board the ferry when the weatherimproves, he said. -VNA
