Hanoi (VNA) 💎– Myanmar’s Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services Senior-General Min Aung Hlaing affirmed to support the amendment of the constitution in condition that the country becomes politically stable.
“We never said not to amend the constitution, but we will do when time is appropriate and politically stable”, he told a press conference.
When eternal peace is achieved with armed groups, the military will withdraw its 25 percent presence in the parliament, he said, adding that the military is making efforts to realise national reconciliation and peace within the new government’s five-year term as directed by President U Htin Kyaw.
It will also cooperate with the civilian government under the head of state and coordinate with State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi for the nation’s interests, he highlighted.
In addition, he denied an allegation that the military clashed with armed groups signing the ceasefire accord with the government.
The Myanmar military is holding 25 percent of seats in the parliament and has the right of veto over changes of 2008 draft constitution. The Commander-in-Chief has authority to appoint home affairs, defence and border affairs ministers.-VNA
