Myanmar strives to build ASEAN flower city

Hanoi (VNA) - Myanmar is planning to turn Pyin Oo Lwin, the country’shill town into a flower city of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations(ASEAN).

Myanmar will use flower varieties and farming technique from the Netherlands inPyin Oo Lwin, thereby improving the flower quality and reducing the import offlowers from other countries, according to the Global New Light of Myanmar.

A private company will import flower seeds from the Netherlands to grow qualityflower plants with the use of natural fertilizer in a bid to export flowers tothe international markets, said the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock andIrrigation of Myanmar. A Flower Growers' Association will also be formed toaccelerate the project.

Meanwhile, Myanmar is scheduled to launch the Pyin Oo Lwin Flower Festival onDecember 1. The one-month festival will take place at the National KandawgyiBotanical Garden, featuring more than 130,000 foreign and local flower speciesincluding artificial ones.  

Last year's annual flower festival attracted millions of visitors.

Pyin Oo Lwin is a scenic hill town in Mandalay region and is located in theShan Highland, some 67 km east of Mandalay and at an altitude of 1,070 metres.-VNA
