Myanmar has tightened security measures at the country's border check points and airports in its efforts to prevent terrorists from infiltrating into the country, reported Myanmar News Agency on October 11.

Hanoi (VNA) - ♚Myanmar has tightened security measures at the country's border checkpoints and airports in its efforts to prevent terrorists from infiltrating intothe country, reported Myanmar News Agency on October 11.
In a meeting of theForeigners Monitoring and Protection Central Committee (FMPCC) in Nay Pyi Tawon October 10, First Vice President U Myint Swe warned that the recentterrorist attacks in northwestern Rakhine state can affect the country'stourism industry and the situation demands security measures be stepped up atborder points. The officialcalled for strict scrutiny of foreigners entering the country, while protectingnormal international visitors, diplomats, personnel of UN agencies andnon-governmental organisations as well as foreigners with other visas. He added thatdefence against black-listed persons and terrorists can only be achievedthrough proper assessment and scrutiny. Clashes betweenMyanmar army and insurgents flared up in Rakhine state as gunmen attacked 24police posts and broke into a military outpost in Rakhine on August 24. Todate, at least 110 people have been killed. Dozens of thousands of Rohingyapeople, mainly women and children, have sought ways to flee into Bangladesh.
Myanmar formed the19-member FMPCC in June 2016 to effectively carry out tasks to scrutiniseforeigners that enter the country and protect them. Thereare four international gates in Myanmar, namely Yangon, Mandalay and Nay PyiTaw international airports and Yangon International Thilawa Port, as well as 23other border gates. The same day, peoplewith different religions, including Buddhism, Christianity, Islam and Hindu inMyanmar held a mass prayer ceremony in Yangon for the first time to pray forfriendship and peace, aiming to ease conflicts in Rakhine state. The event at theAung San Stadium was sponsored by the ruling National League for Democracy party(NLD). It was attended by about 30,000 people, including Yangon regiongovernment officials and parliament members as well as representatives ofdifferent religions.-VNA
