PM breaks ground for Can Tho’s western belt road project

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on November 17 broke the ground for the western belt road of the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho, which connects National Highways 91 and 61C.

Can Tho (VNA) – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinhon November 17 broke the ground for the western belt roadof the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho, which connects National Highways 91 and61C.

The road has a total length of 19.4km and surface width of 11m,with 24 middle and small bridges, and one large bridge. It crosses O Mon, BinhThuy, Phong Dien, Ninh Kieu and Cai Rang districts.

The project, which has a total investment of over 3.83trillion VND (154.38 million USD), is scheduled to complete in 2026 andexpected to facilitate transport activities between Can Tho and neighbouringlocalities, reducing congestions and expanding the city’s development space inthe west.

Addressing the ground-breaking ceremony, PM Chinh said that infrastructureis one of the three strategic focuses of Vietnam to complete its developmentgoals towards 2030.

Highlighting the Party and State’s special attention to thepromotion of socio-economic development of Can Tho and the Mekong Delta regionin general, the PM noted that in this tenure, the State has provided thelargest ever amount of capital for the infrastructure development in the MekongDelta region. Meanwhile, other resources have also been mobilised for transportinfrastructure development in Can Tho in all fields, he added.

The PM held that the western belt road of Can Tho will helpform an important outer belt axis connecting important traffic ones of theMekong Delta region, contributing to the creation of an inter-regionaltransport system, linking Can Tho city with neighboring localities, and making astrong impetus to promote socio-economic and tourism development for the city,and expanding a new development space for Can Tho.

The Government leader asked the local Party Organisation andadministration at all levels of Can Tho to create favourable conditions for theimplementation of the project, while paying attention to ensuring good livingconditions for 589 households that have to move to give space for the project./.
