Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s attendance at the G20 Summit in Brazil and official visit to the Dominican Republic from November 16 – 21 will convey a message of Vietnam as a dynamic and reform-oriented nation that stands ready to take on global responsibilities, according to Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Thanh Binh.

He told the press on the threshold of the Government leader’s trip that this will mark Vietnam's fifth participation in a G20 Summit and the first-ever visit by a key Vietnamese leader to the Caribbean country.

The 2024 summit, themed "Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet," will prioritise discussions on poverty elimination, sustainable development, energy transition, and global governance reform, he said, adding it will gather leaders from G20 member countries, 19 guest ones, and 15 major international organisations, with 100 working group meetings and nearly 20 ministerial conferences.

In the framework of the summit, PM Chinh is scheduled to hold talks with Brazilian President Lula da Silva to review the implementation of high-level agreements reached during his September 2023 visit and discuss major orientations and substantive measures to elevate the bilateral relationship. He will also attend several events marking the 35th anniversary of the Vietnam-Brazil diplomatic relations, including the inauguration of a memorial plaque honouring President Ho Chi Minh in Rio de Janeiro.

Highlighting the significance of PM Chinh’s attendance at the G20 Summit, Binh said it will help elevate Vietnam’s position in the group, marking the first time the Vietnamese Government leader has been invited though Vietnam is not holding any rotating chairmanship of any multilateral forums.

This is a vivid illustration for the fact that the international community, including host Brazil, have increasingly respected the role of the Vietnamese economy globally as well as the country’s impacts on and contributions to global multilateral mechanisms.

He went on to say that the attendance will affirm Vietnam’s responsible contributions to addressing global challenges while providing opportunities for the country to consolidate and strengthen collaboration with its partners across various sectors.

At the event, PM Chinh will deliver speeches at two sessions on November 18 and 19, sharing Vietnam’s experiences in poverty alleviation and sustainable development strategies. He will also announce Vietnam's hosting of the fourth Partnering for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030 (P4G) Summit in 2025 and endorse the Call to Action on Global Governance Reform, G20’s important document reflecting its resolve to reform and modernise international institutions like the United Nations, the World Trade Organisation, and the International Monetary Fund.

According to Binh, PM Chinh’s diplomatic engagement in the framework of the summit will be an opportunity to deepen multi-faceted relationship with countries and international organisations and continue carrying out the foreign diplomacy of independence, self-reliance, and multilateralisation and diversification of external relations.

With Brazil, the trip will help develop the bilateral ties to a new high, enhance political commitments and confidence, expand collaboration, and make the relationship more comprehensive, intensive, extensive, and sustainable, bringing practical benefits to the two peoples.

The diplomat said PM Chinh’s official visit to the Dominican Republic demonstrates Vietnam’s desire to continue consolidating and deepening the solidarity, friendship, and sound cooperation with the country ahead of the 20th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2025. Over the past years, the bilateral ties have shown positive development, with regular delegation exchanges as well as rapid growth in the economic – trade relations.

It will create motives to promote the economic, trade and investment ties between the two nations, particularly in the potential fields of agriculture, industry, production of building materials, energy-oil and gas, telecommunications, and tourism, among others, he added.

Binh expressed his confidence that the diplomatic missions will reinforce Vietnam's international standing while opening new chapters in the relations with Brazil and the Dominican Republic, contributing to peace, stability, and development in the two regions and the world./.
