Singapore (VNA) - Drones could be used to deliver emergencymedical supplies or to respond to security incidents under a new system, whichis being developed in Singapore.

The Future Flight Consortium on July 24 said it had beenselected by the country's Civil Aviation Authority and Ministry of Transport todevelop the drone programme.

The 13-member consortium said it will generate flight pathsfor the drones, and develop a private communications network as well astake-off and landing sites. The drones would be operated remotely by pilots atan operations centre and be able to travel relatively long distances across thenation.

Future Flight project director Ong Jiin Joo said its goal isto make it possible for safe and effective drone operation of any enterprisewho needs to fly drones beyond the visual sight of the pilots.

The consortium said the system development will last for twoyears, and pledged to conduct rigorous safety tests.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force and fellow consortiummember Garuda Robotics said they were in talks to use drones in the force'soperations, particularly in delivering life-saving supplies.

A hospital operator in the consortium said it plans to usedrones to transport blood samples and specimens between its hospitals and the centrallaboratory.-VNA
