This year’s street parade was said to be the grandest in Chingay’s43-year history. Themed “We love Singapore”, it showed the country’srespect for the past as well as hope for the future.
The event got off to a colourful start with a modern dance performanceby thousands of amateur artists in handmade outfits decked with plasticflowers. Nearly one million of such flowers were made from used plasticbags by half a million Singaporeans since a year ago.
Some 4,000 foreign performers from 14 countries across the world alsomade an appearance with a wide range of vibrant acts to show off theirsignature cultures.
Vietnam also brought to the 2015 Chingay Parade the traditional “ao dai” (long robe) and Tay Nguyen’s Gong performances.
According to the organiser, this year’s parade was for everyone, withthe youngest performers just five and the oldest an 84-year-old man.
It is estimated that between 180,000 and 200,000 people turned up for the two days of Chingay.-VNA
